    WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL?

Geothermal is the exchange of energy using the ground's heating and cooling properties to heat or cool our living spaces.

Very simply, a geothermal system is the most efficient and environmentally clean heating and cooling system in the world today.  These systems are an alternative to traditional oil- gas- or coal-fired heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.  Geothermal systems are also referred to as Geoexchange systems and earth energy systems.

Unlike fossil energy, energy for Geoexchange systems doesn’t run out.  As energy is taken from the ground it is replaced by the sun.

     HOW DOES IT WORK?

There is a steady supply of heat in the ground to keep you in comfort all winter long, even in the depths of the coldest winter. A direct exchange geothermal system consists of a compressor unit, installed in your house, which is attached to a series of copper pipes buried in the ground.  The copper pipes are highly efficient conductors of heat.  A refrigerant is circulated through the pipes. The refrigerant in the pipes absorbs the heat from the ground and is pumped back into the house.

In the summer, the whole process reverses itself. Heat is removed from the house and transferred into the ground.

     WHAT ARE THE SAVINGS?

Geothermal systems provide tremendous savings over the long term as compared to traditional sources of energy as oil, electric, natural gas, or propane. Annual heating bills are anywhere from 50 to 75% lower, depending on the system that is replaced. A geothermal installation pays for itself in savings. Geothermal energy is not subject to rising costs or unpredictable price swings. It is always available, right in your own backyard!

    OTHER BENEFITS

COMFORT: In homeowner surveys, geothermal systems are ranked as "more comfortable" than traditional gas, oil, or electric systems. Geothermal systems get rid of the sudden temperature and humidity changes that traditional systems are prone to, as well as the occasional odour caused by combustion of fossil fuels.

HOT WATER: You will benefit from reduced cost hot water. A geothermal system will heat your water 2 to 3 times more efficiently than a regular hot water tank.

NOISE-FREE A/C: Since the geothermal system also provides air conditioning, no noisy traditional outdoor unit is required.

SAFETY: Geothermal systems have no danger of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning, as there is no flame and no chimney. There is no more need to worry about natural gas leaks.

LONG SYSTEM LIFE: Geothermal units have a life expectancy of at least 20 years.

    WHAT IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?

Geothermal systems can be completely non-polluting. Installing a geothermal system to replace a fossil fuel system immediately cuts your personal emissions contribution by 50%, or the equivalent of taking several cars off the road.
Geothermal systems are clearly the environmental wave of the future.
